Lausanne, 23 October 2025 – The Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU) has launched an investigation into allegations of harassment and abuse of athletes by Costa Rican coach, Mr Francisco Rivas Espinoza. This decision has been taken to safeguard public confidence in the integrity of aquatics and to protect the well-being of those involved in the sport.
During the provisional suspension, Mr Rivas Espinoza is not allowed to hold any position, including coaching, within World Aquatics, any World Aquatics Continental Organisation, or any World Aquatics Member Federation, including affiliated clubs or recognised bodies. The provisional suspension shall also prevent him from taking part in any aquatic-related activities and/or events on behalf of these organisations, as well as participating or attending, in any capacity, in any aquatic competition.
Given that the case is ongoing, the AQIU will not provide further comments at this stage.
