CAS Confirms Two-Year Ban Imposed on Montenegro Water Polo Athlete Aleksa Ukropina

5 September 2025, Lausanne – The Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU) welcomes the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of Montenegrin water polo athlete, Aleksa Ukropina.

The CAS dismissed the appeal lodged by Mr Ukropina, thus confirming that he committed an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) and upholding the sanction of two (2) years of ineligibility to be served until 14 February 2026. Additionally, all competitive results obtained by the athlete from 21 January 2024 until 14 February 2024 (date of the provisional suspension) have been disqualified.

The AQIU reminds all athletes that they are responsible for any substances found in their bodies. To help them make informed choices, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) publishes a Prohibited List of all banned substances and methods in sport, which is updated annually. To compete fairly, athletes are encouraged to complete the WADA e-Learning Course “ADEL International Level Athletes Education Program” to better understand the rules.
